Nonlinear rheology of Laponite suspensions under an external drive
We investigate the nonlinear rheological behavior of colloidal suspensions of Laponite, a synthetic clay, driven by steady homogeneous shear strain. We show that the external drive leads to drastic slowing down of the aging dynamics or even, in some cases, in rejuvenation of the system. Under shear, after a surprisingly long time, the spontaneous aging process observed at rest is suppressed. Th...
متن کاملNonlinear dynamics of self-pulsating laser diodes under external drive.
A self-pulsating laser diode under external drive shows the nonlinear dynamical effects of two competing frequencies. One can establish a route to chaos by increasing the modulation current. However, when the modulation frequency is varied, the chaotic state is suddenly destroyed at the harmonic frequencies of the self-pulsating frequency. This approach therefore offers a simple chaotic light s...
متن کاملTheory of nonlinear rheology and yielding of dense colloidal suspensions.
A first-principles approach to the nonlinear flow of dense suspensions is presented which captures shear thinning of colloidal fluids and dynamical yielding of colloidal glasses. The advection of density fluctuations plays a central role, suppressing the caging of particles and speeding up structural relaxation. A mode coupling approach is developed to explore these effects.
متن کاملPhysicochemical effects in aging aqueous Laponite suspensions.
We study aging behavior of an aqueous suspension of Laponite as a function of concentration of Laponite, concentration of salt, time elapsed since preparation of suspension (idle time), and temperature by carrying extensive rheological and conductivity experiments. We observe that temporal evolution of elastic moduli, which describes structural build-up and aging, shifts to low times for experi...
متن کاملExtensional rheology of active suspensions.
A simple model is presented for the effective extensional rheology of a dilute suspension of active particles, such as self-propelled microswimmers, extending previous classical studies on suspensions of passive rodlike particles. Neglecting particle-particle hydrodynamic interactions, we characterize the configuration of the suspension by an orientation distribution, which satisfies a Fokker-P...
